My entire life, I have always been the strange-bird who actually got excited whenever I heard some major change was on its way. A change in the layout of the family-room furniture. A change of teachers mid-semester. A change from experiencing school all day in one classroom to changing classrooms each period. A change of college major from music to psychology. A change in career moves from practicing psychologist back to full-time musician.
So I'm not shy about embracing opportunities that brings change to my life as well. I've got dozens of musicals, programs and shows in my archives to show for it.
This year is definitely marking a very significant series of Changes I am embarking on.
As of January 2018, my secondary job as co-creator of MCL Chicago is coming to a complete close. The MCL Chicago theater will no longer be a physical theater space and I will no longer have all the responsibilities that came with my-part of the duties running that space.
As of January 2018 the MINt Program has moved over to performing on the Main Stage of The Annoyance theater, and changed to happening on Tuesday nights at 7:30pm. MINT will be 5 years old this April, and this is the first major change this program has ever experienced.
Finally, as of January 2018, I am the new owner and manager of this exceptionally talented theater company Wavelength. Wavelength has been touring for over 38 years, bringing their style of comedy, motivation and inspiration to Educators and Teachers around the nation. I will be spending this year familiarizing myself more intimately with the workings of this great company, fostering opportunities for new material and growth, and setting us up for many more years of hopeful success!
Taking on Wavelength is exciting, encouraging and a tad intimidating at times. The shoes left behind by the highly respected and professional leadership of Jim & Rochelle Winter are impressive and wisdom-filled in ways I have yet to appreciate, I am certain. I aspire to be the best steward of this company that I can be, and to bring a sense of future possibilities that keeps everyone on the team motivated...and laughing!
Stephanie McCullough, PsyD
I moved to Chicago in 1996 to attend graduate school. I started playing piano for improv shows at iO and ComedySportz in 1998. I finished my post-doctoral residency in 2001 and in 2004 I left my job as a Psychologist in an residential and school program to tour with the Second City Touring Company. In 2006 I stopped touring and began teaching full-time with the Second City while also freelancing as a music director all over town. I attended my first Wavelength rehearsal in the early spring of 2007 as a guest music director on Ric Walker's recommendation. In 2013 I began to produce the MINt program, which is still going strong, and in 2014 I opened MCL Chicago, the worlds first comedy theater devoted specifically to musical improv and musical comedy. With 5 years experience producing and managing a full-time theater company and 20 years teaching and performing comedy and sketch all over the country - taking on the new ownership of Wavelength is a very natural and comfortable choice.
